Below is my favorite's of Albrecht Dürer
The Lion
This painting is very nice. It shows great detail the main of the Lion and also in the grass the lion is sitting in. Lots of detail is certain places is very common in a lot of Dürer's paintings.
Little Owl
There are a couple of Dürer's works that are very similar to this. They all have an animal on a plain white background. Personally I love this style of painting. He shows a large amount of detail in the owl. You can actually see the feathers on the owl. The white background really contrasts with Owl which really makes the owl pop.
Wings of a Roller
This work of Art is another work similar to The Owl. One thing that I really enjoy about this painting is the fact that it is only the wing of the roller not the entire thing. If Dürer did paint the entire thing there would not be as much detail. Detail is what I look for in a great painting.
Praying Hands
Dürer is a very religious man. Many of his artworks are of stories in the bible or other religious scenes such as praying hands. Again, just like most of Dürer's works, I love the detail. Just by glancing over the hands you could tell they are worn, old, and tired. You can see the veins in is hands and how realistic his knuckles look. It is truly great.
Dürer Self Portrait
This painting is amazing. I could talk about this painting for hours. But that is hard to do on a website. So i'll just short up my lecture a bit.
So for starters just like most of Dürer's works, I love the detail. You can actually see the the curls of his hair and each bristle on his fur coat. You can see the veins in his hands popping out.
So before I move on to the audacity of this work let me give you some info on art. So when a portrait is done the subject's head is almost always turned away and they are looking at you almost as in motion. They do this to not only to show the highlights of the persons face but make the subject to seem humble. They need this because most people who got portraits were very rich and people didn't really like them.
But what is amazing about Dürer is this portrait is that he painted himself looking straight out. Before Dürer there was only one man who has been painted in this way. This man was Jesus. Dürer wanted himself, I believe, to look so much like Jesus that he showed himself with brown hair instead of his natural blonde hair just as Jesus was depicted. So is Dürer Comparing himself to Jesus or is he just showing himself as a humble servant
His hand which is stroking his fur coat can be interpreted as two things. First is showing us that he is very wealthy and powerful making him seem even more like Jesus, a king. This is one augment used by many people. But this can also be a sign for something more humble. One could argument someone could use is that instead of showing off his wealth he is using his hand to separate himself from his audience. If this is the case he is showing himself as a servant to Jesus.
